“Something Went Wrong on my Way to Heaven…”

LUCYLLE

I first came to know Lucylle when I was waiting for a ride along Cubao.  She was a teenager, about 16 or 17 years of age.  She was cute. And her hair seemed to fly as the buses pass the place where we were standing.  She wears a ready smile, yet her face was as lonely as a cold night.  Yes, she was attractive and seemed to cast a spell when she turned away.  She was limping.  She had only one real  leg, the other was made of wood.  She met an accident which I could not understand.   And her bag of heavy belongings never seemed to bother her – an empty bottle, several baby clothes, an old sweater and a small pillow.  She said her baby was in a wooden crib somewhere in the busy streets or maybe near the wet market.  I couldn’t remember exactly.  What was left with me was the aura of a lost child, of a lonely voice, pleading for help, and as if longing to be heard and understood.  But her voice was swallowed by the busy street.

Lucylle left the province.  She was made to believe that she will work as a saleslady in a big department store, but it was a lie.  She ended up as a domestic helper.  She left her employer after a year.  And the baby she was pleading to be helped was the daughter of one of her employer’s sons.  And she has nowhere to go.  She lives with the other lucylles in the busy city.  As she left my sight, I could only remember her words: she was willing to die for her baby; she was ready to sacrifice for her baby…. She was willing to walk along this busy road called Life, literally with one leg, , symbolically, she was ready to walk despite the obstacles and was willing to give her all… She was Lucylle.

After my  last  Sunday Mass, and after dinner, I would spend my time, maybe an hour or two, watching TV, or opening my emails, amidst the comfort of my room.   And despite the concerns and demands of my ministry, I thank God for letting Lucylle pass  the road I am traveling.  For inspiration, for strength, for a humbling experience  - for the many lucylles out there.  It was not a wrong turn afterall…
